INTRODUCTION

The High Court (T) Commercial Division Library (herein after referred as Commercial Court library) is located in the Commercial Court Building, situated at the junction of Kivukoni Front and Luthuli Streets.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LIBRARY

1. The library is designed to be more functional rather than monumental. It is easy to navigate and economical to operate, and facilitate the delivery of high-quality services.

2. The library is in a flexible mode to allow expansion or any other innovations brought about by the need and increase of the users.

FUNCTIONAL AREAS

The library has two basic elements which include: the processing department, shelving and the reading areas.

1. Processing Department: This is an area where new materials are being processed before reaching users

2. Book Shelving, Reading areas : Are the areas which are carefully calculated in for shelving for books as well as reading spaces for users

BORROWING AND CIRCULATION OF LIBRARY MATERIALS

The library is equipped with one type of catalogue. This is:

Automated Library Catalogue: This new computerized Library catalogue has been developed using Weblis open source software. The catalogue can be accessed and searched at any computer which connected to the Local Area Network (LAN) within the Organization and can be accessed through the Court website of the Court. There are some computer terminals to facilitate searching the automated library catalogue in the Library. Users can conduct a simple search by using Title, Author, ISBN, Barcode, Class number and Subject as search terms. Search results will give information on the title of the book, Author, Subject, Class number where the book is located on the shelf and whether such a book has been borrowed or not.

LIBRARY RESOURCES

The information resources will be of two types. These are non-electronic resources (Law Reports, Cases means Judgment and Ruling, Government Notes, Laws of Tanzania, Acts, High Court Digest, Books, Journals) and electronic resources.

• Non-Electronic Resource: The library is equipped with some of the best books in the fields of Law, and there are journals which cover the field of Law like Journal of the Law Society, The Voice of Haki, Journal of The East African Magistrates and Judges Association, Commonwealth Judicial Journal.

• Electronic resources: Use of electronic resources is currently in high demand in most Organizations. As a modern library it is equipped with online database including Electronic Journal Database, Tanzania Government Information Gateway and some other important users with different type.

OPENING AND CLOSING HOURS

From Monday to Friday 09.00 AM TO 1530 hrs.

The library will remain closed on Saturday and Public holidays.

USERS

Users of the Library are Judges, Registrars, Magistrates, Advocates, Researchers, and all Staffs’. Members of the Public are free to access electronic information.
