Hon. Judge Butamo. K. Phillip
Hon Justice Butamo Kasuka Phillip, holds a Master of Laws (LL. M) degree in
Internationaland Comparative Law from Chicago – Kent College of Law, USA
and Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.Hons) degree from the University of Dar es Salaam,
Tanzania. Prior to her appointment as a Judge of the High Court of Tanzania, She
was a Deputy Permanent Secretary at Vice President’s Office (Union affairs and
Environment) Justice Phillip has been in legal practice since 1992. She has worked
as a State Attorney at the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs and Justice, Legal Officer
a the National Bank of Commerce and as a Private Advocate, engaging in consultancy
and litigation, mainly in civil case, commercial cases, labour and corporate matters,
arbitration and mediation, and human rights issues. She has served as a board member
of Kagera Regional Tax Revenue Appeal Board, Tanzania Communication Regulatory
Authority (TRA) and a member of the Fair Competition Tribunal (FTC) Justice Phillip
is a Certified Director in accordance with the standards of the Institute of Directors
in Tanzania (IoDT) and has been a member of the Tanganyika Law Society- (TLS), East
Africa Law Society (AELS). International Bar Association-(IBA), the Panel of Arbitrators
of the National Construction Council and associate member of the Institute of Arbitrators.
She is also a member of the Tanzania Women Judges Association (TAWJA),International
of Women Judges (IAWJ) and Tanzania Women Lawyers Association (TAWLA)
